How to Factory Reset An iPhone

Last updated on

This video demonstrates how to factory reset an iPhone, also known as a “hard reset”. This process is useful if you would like to sell your iPhone or give it to someone else. Your phone will be restored to the state it was in when you first pulled it out of its box. Below are the specific steps discussed, during the video.

1. Ensure you’re connected to WiFi
2. Backup your iPhone, using iCloud. Note that to restore your backup to another phone, the other phone must have the same iOS version or newer.
3. Under “Settings”, disable “Find My iPhone”
4. Under “Settings”, choose “General”, and then choose “Reset”
5. Choose “Erase All Content and Settings” (if you ever intend to restore your data to another phone, make sure you have done step 2!)
6. Once you’re prompted and you enter your password, choose “Erase iPhone”
7. Click on “Erase iPhone” once more, as confirmation
8. Wait about 5 minutes and your iPhone will be reset to factory defaults!

Note: if you are in fact selling or donating your phone, consider removing the SIM card.
